What to Do While Waiting for an Emergency Electrician

📅 July 2026 🕐 4 min read 📍 FCF Fire and Electrical Brisbane

Electrical emergencies don't stick to business hours. Whether it is a sparking outlet at 2 AM or a complete power failure during a busy weekend service, electrical faults can be dangerous and stressful.

If you are facing an electrical emergency in Brisbane, your first step should always be to call a licensed 24/7 emergency electrician. But what should you do while you wait for them to arrive? Here is a crucial safety guide.

1. Do Not Touch the Source of the Problem

This is the golden rule. If an appliance is smoking, an outlet is sparking, or a wire is exposed, stay well away. Never attempt to unplug a sparking appliance or throw water on an electrical fire. Water conducts electricity and will make the situation deadly.

2. Turn Off the Main Power

If it is safe to do so, go to your switchboard and turn off the main power switch. This will immediately cut electricity to the entire property and significantly reduce the risk of fire or electrocution. If your switchboard is sparking or smoking, do not touch it — evacuate the area immediately.

3. Evacuate if Necessary

If you smell burning plastic, see smoke, or spot flames, evacuate the building immediately and call 000. Electrical fires can spread rapidly within wall cavities where they are difficult to extinguish.

4. Check for Energex Outages

If you have lost power completely, it might not be a fault within your property. Check the Energex outage map on your smartphone or look outside to see if your neighbours' lights are also off. If it is a grid outage, an emergency electrician won't be able to restore your power.

5. Keep Fridge and Freezer Doors Closed

During a power outage, your refrigerator will keep food cold for about 4 hours, and a full freezer will hold its temperature for up to 48 hours — provided you keep the doors closed. Avoid opening them unless absolutely necessary.
