5 Signs Your Brisbane Property Needs a Switchboard Upgrade

📅 June 2026 🕐 5 min read 📍 FCF Fire and Electrical Brisbane

Your electrical switchboard is the central hub of your property's power supply. It distributes electricity to every circuit, appliance, and light fitting in your home or commercial building.

However, many older properties across Brisbane's northside — in suburbs like Windsor, Lutwyche, and Stafford — are still running on outdated switchboards that were never designed to handle the power demands of modern life.

At FCF Fire and Electrical Brisbane, switchboard upgrades are one of our most requested services. Here are five clear signs that your switchboard needs an immediate upgrade.

1. Ceramic Fuses (Old-Style Fuses)

If you open your switchboard and see old ceramic fuses with fuse wire, your system is dangerously outdated. These older boards do not have safety switches (RCDs). If an electrical fault occurs, a ceramic fuse will simply blow, but it won't cut the power fast enough to prevent a fatal electric shock. Modern switchboards use automatic circuit breakers and RCDs that trip in milliseconds.

2. Tripping Power and Flickering Lights

Are you constantly walking out to the switchboard to reset a tripped circuit breaker? Do your lights flicker when you turn on the air conditioner or the microwave? This is a clear sign that your switchboard is overloaded. Modern homes and offices draw significantly more power than they did 20 years ago, and an old board simply cannot keep up with the demand.

3. Sparks, Burning Smells, or Blackened Switches

⚠ This is a severe electrical emergency. If you ever smell a burning plastic odour near your switchboard, or notice that the plastic around the switches is blackened or melted, turn off your main power immediately and call an emergency electrician.

This indicates that the wiring is overheating and an electrical fire is imminent. Do not delay — call FCF Fire and Electrical Brisbane on 07 3568 5825 immediately.

4. Crowded and Messy Wiring

A safe switchboard is a tidy switchboard. If your board is a tangled mess of wires, or if new circuits have been crammed in with no space left, it poses a significant fire risk and makes fault-finding incredibly difficult. A switchboard upgrade will organise your circuits and provide room for future expansion, such as adding a new split system air conditioner or an EV charger.

5. You Don't Have Safety Switches (RCDs)

In Queensland, it is a legal requirement for all rental properties and sold properties to have safety switches installed on power point circuits. Even if you own your home, having safety switches on all circuits (including lighting and hot water) is the only way to protect your family or staff from electrocution.

The Upgrade Process

Upgrading a switchboard is a complex job that must be performed by a licensed electrician. When you hire FCF Fire and Electrical Brisbane, we will:

  1. Safely disconnect the mains power.
  2. Remove the old, hazardous panel and wiring.
  3. Install a new, fire-resistant enclosure.
  4. Fit modern circuit breakers and RCD safety switches for every circuit.
  5. Thoroughly test the entire system to ensure compliance with the latest AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules.

Based in Everton Hills, we provide switchboard upgrades for residential and commercial properties from the Brisbane CBD all the way to Caboolture and Redcliffe. Don't wait for a dangerous fault to occur.
